THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO: REVIEW

This is a book live always wanted to read and happily it met and expected all expectaTion. I expected swash backling adventure but the book turned to be much more psycHological than that. This is on of those books that has been retold and copied so many times you wonder if the orIginal will feel tired- but it doesn’t.

Monte Cristo tells the story of ed mond dantes- he’s young and handsome. About to marry the girl he loves, and has just been made caption of his own ship.

Unfortunately for dantes ,on his voyage he was asked to make a stop at. The island of Elba to receive and deliver. A letter, this is 1815 and france is still torn between the Bona parties and the royalists and napoleon himself is just sitting on island scheming to retake france. So, playing on frances istability, plantes is framed for treason by jealous “friends”. He’s thrown in to a Dungeon and forgotten by the rest of the world.

Here’s what you probably know already but stop reading if you don’t it. Dantes manages to escape from prison years later. Smarter and together and determined to take revenge against his betrayers. The surprise in this book is how complicated and subtle his schemes are he spends years setting up his plots, integrates himself in to the lives of his cinemies , and even be friends their children. He know from the start that revenge can be bad business- it takes over your life. And leaves you with nothing else.

The novel is also part of the Romantic period , which run in Europe from about 1800 to 1846, I could attempt to explain the defining feature of this book . Dantes loves Mercedes for life. Even though he feels horribly betrayed by her. He’s ruled by emotion but at the same time he is almost completely mastered his emotions so he can deceive everyone around him. There a possibility for a love in Dante life but he’s so caught up in revenge he dOEsn’’t see it.
